CMS Platforms in 2016...

There are over one billion websites on the internet and in order to stay competitive, it has become a standard requirement for businesses to have a fully responsive website.

This demand for responsive websites has been recognised worldwide, causing a race to develop websites rapidly on open-source Content Management Systems (CMS). Over a third of websites online are now powered by WordPress, Joomla! Drupal and Magento. Of these four platforms, WordPress dominates the CMS market with over 60% of the market share.

CMS Analysis:

Platforms with out of date Software

In March 2015, Google reported that a number of websites were trying to steal information or install harmful software, with 17 million users being greeted by warning messages.

Just one year later in March 2016, this number had increased to 50 million – a staggering rise in just one year.

In order to analyse the quality of websites on the internet we have looked at a report carried out in 2016 by Sucuri. This assessment analysed 11,000 websites. 75% of these were on the WordPress platform, and over 50% were out of date.

Looking at Joomla! and Drupal, over 80% of the software on these platforms was also out of date.

The amount of CMS websites built on open-source platforms has led to a big problem - website owners and service providers now create websites using these open source systems, that are not maintained or regularly updated.

Let's look at this in more detail...

Platforms of Infected Websites (Infected Websites Platform Distribution)

The three CMS platforms that were the most affected were WordPress, Joomla! And Magento. This was due to the way the webmasters had implemented use of the CMS systems. The report looked at the following platforms, focusing on the first quarter of 2016:

  • Joomla! (14%)
  • Magento (5%)

The analysis revealed that the CMS platforms showed improper deployment, configuration and low quality overall maintenance by the webmasters and their hosts.
